Exploring Windermere

Located in the heart of the Lake District, Windermere has been a popular tourist destination since the Victorian times. Offering panoramic views and easy access to the lake, Windermere is breathtaking. Arguably the most famous and popular area of the Lake District, Windermere offers attractions, activities and great access to the nearby towns such as Bowness-on-Windermere

Windermere Lake

Home to the largest lake in England at 10.5 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, it’s no surprise that a lot of activities in Windmere centre around the lake. We’d recommend a lake cruise during your stay. With over 100 scheduled sailings per day in the summer, the cruises are extremely popular and offer journeys from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. We’d recommend taking a cruise where you can hop off at each stop, explore the area and jump back on to carry on the journey – it’s a really fantastic way of exploring the Lake District!

Windermere Jetty has an impressive collection of steamboats which we’d recommend visiting! With plenty of history, there are 40 vessels which tell the story of boating on Lake Windermere from the 1700s.

If you’d like to try your hand at paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing or sailing, Windermere Lake is the perfect spot for you. The lake is also popular for wild swimming so don’t forget to bring your swimming costume!

Windermere Town

The small town of Windermere is located just a mile from the lake itself. With shops, restaurants and bars, you’ll have plenty to explore.

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, we’d recommend visiting Francine’s Restaurant which is a beautiful continental style bistro and coffee house. When it comes to drinking in Windermere, there are lots of pubs and bars serving beers from all over the world as well as locally brewed. We’d recommend popping into The Arts Bar or The Flying Pig
